Frequently Asked Questions
What is Humanistic Counselling?
Humanistic counselling believes that every individual has potential and that painful and difficult life events may have put blocks in the way to prevent them reaching their potential. This can impact on an individual’s self worth. A therapist can gently help to remove the blocks to build up their self worth and enable the individual to reach their potential.
What can I expect from our first session together?
Research has shown that the relationship between counsellor and client is the most important aspect for enabling change for the client. It is therefore important for us to see if we can work together. This first session is an opportunity to do this. It is 30 minutes and free. I will find out a bit more about what might bring you to counselling and you can ask any questions you may have. If you then decide you do want counselling we will arrange a regular weekly time.
How often will we meet and how long will our sessions be?
The first introductory session is 30 minutes if you then decide you do want counselling sessions are 50 minutes long and weekly at an agreed time and day. Generally, it is the same time on the same day every week though there may be able to be some flexibility in this depending on availability.
How many sessions will I need?
There are no fixed amount of sessions – it will depend on you and what you feel you need. We can agree to a fixed amount say 6 or 12 but it could be more open ended. We will review every six sessions to check in with where you feel you are and how you feel it is progressing.
Where are your sessions?
I work from a room in 198 Church Road, Hove which is opposite Tescos and near the library and on Wednesdays 4-8pm in 40 Wilbury road, Hove, BN3 3JP.
I also do online sessions.
What age do you work with?
I work with people aged 13 and above.
What issues can counselling help with?
Essentially counselling can help with anything that may be going on in your life. I’ve worked with many issues such as anxiety, stress, low self esteem, self harm and depression. You may not have a label for what is going on and that is ok – you may be feeling confused or overwhelmed by feelings - counselling can be a safe non-judgemental space to explore this.
How confidential are the sessions?
The sessions are confidential unless you disclose something that is seriously harmful to yourself or others.
I have supervision where I discuss my work but your identity would never be disclosed.
